The Boys and Girls Club of Lincoln county will host the “13 Going on 30” Day Camp Saturday. The camp is a chance for young girls in the area to learn about goal setting, selecting positive role models, social media, bullying and peer pressure.

“Have you ever known a 13-year-old girl that acted like a 30-year-old woman or made decisions like one? Well, that’s exactly why I developed my platform of ’13 Going On 30,'” said Jasmine Murray on her website. “Every day I see teen girls in our community that are growing up too fast, and it’s a problem that is being overlooked in our society.”

The program is part of Murray’s campaign for the Miss Mississippi pageant. She is most well known as a finalist on the eighth season of American Idol. Murray is a graduate of the Mississippi School of the Arts and is a student at Mississippi State and is currently holding the title of Miss Riverland.

“I was bullied in school to the point of being beat up on the playground,” said Murray. “I didn’t quite know how to stand up for myself. I want others to understand and be educated so that they are not victims of bullying and so they won’t make unwise decisions because of it.”

Murray has selected 14 ambassadors to spread her “13 going on 30” message across the state. Britney Clark will be the representative for the event. Clark is also a pageant winner and a recent graduate of MSU. She will be hosting and coordinating the event.

“I have a passion for helping people, especially young girls,” said Clark. “I can use this event as an outlet to help them the best way I can.”

The event is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club at 213 South Second St. It will include music, a motivational speaker and food, provided by Broma’s Deli, Bowie’s and Janie’s Bakery.
