Girls’ camp deemed a success

The Lincoln County Boys and Girls Club hosted the “13 going on 30” day camp last Saturday, and according to staff it was a great success.

“I think it went really well,” said Britney Clark, ambassador and Lincoln County representative for the “13 going on 30” campaign.

The program was created by Jasmine Murray while campaigning for Miss Mississippi. It focuses on reaching out to young girls and discussing issues that are plaguing their generation through community camps.

Britney Clark got involved as a way to help the youth of her community.

The camp began with a group dance to Pherrell Williams’s “Happy,” which set the upbeat tone for the rest of the event. Campers were then divided into smaller groups based on age to discuss goal setting, role models, social media, bullying and peer pressure. The camp concluded with lunch and a motivational speaker.

“I think the main thing the girls took away was more self-esteem,” Clark said, “they understand that you don’t have to believe everything people say.” She added that the discussion topics reinforced the theme, and also, the motivational speaker, Cherry Head, drove home the message of building confidence.

“I hope to make this an annual event,” said Clark. “This is just the beginning.”

Clark said that the lunch was also a big hit. It was donated by Janie’s Pastry Shop, Bowie Barbecue, Broma’s Deli, Fox’s Pizza and Walmart.
