2 dead in county wreck

A single-car accident on Interstate 55 in Lincoln County left an Illinois couple dead Saturday morning.

At 9:14 a.m. Saturday, the Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M in Brookhaven responded to an accident on Interstate 55 southbound near mile marker 24. Trooper First Class Brandon Fortenberry of the Mississippi Highway Patrol reported that Clarice Shuller, 80, of South Beloit, Ill., Clarice’s husband, Ray Shuller, 80, of the same address, was the only passenger in the car.

Ray Shuller was pronounced dead on the scene by Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris at 10:10 a.m. Clarice Shuller was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson where she later died at 1:11 p.m.

Fortenberry said the couple was wearing seatbelts and the reason for the car drifting off the road is not known. He said the accident remains under investigation.
