The Kappa Kappa Iota sorority will raise money for their service projects for 2014-15 this Saturday at their third annual Thrift Store Sale.

The sale will be in Cannon Hall at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 224 W. Monticello St., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The sorority is a group of working and retired teachers who bond together to bring scholarships and serve the needy in the community during the winter holidays, said member DeeDee Roberts, who is a teacher at Brookhaven Elementary.

“We have 21 members,” Roberts said. “It’s a service-oriented group of retired and working teachers.

“Our thrift sale money goes to scholarships for seniors,” she explained. She said the group has a scholarship committee that goes to each of the area’s school counselors, including Brookhaven Academy, and makes sure they have all the necessary paperwork and information for possible candidates.

Roberts said the group is proud to have given two scholarships each year.

“We have given two area seniors $500 scholarships for the last three years,” she said. “That’s what this money will be used for. We are hoping that our thrift sale will grow and that we will be able to give more and larger scholarships in the future.”

Roberts said that the applications for this year, 2013-14 have been submitted and they are in the process of choosing the final two recipients.

Roberts said that during Thanksgiving and Christmas they look for service projects.

“We always do a holiday project,” she said. “We chose an agency or organization that we give to, we take food to food banks and sometimes we hear about the needs of someone in the community, such as a family whose home is burned or other crises where there is an urgent need, and we respond to that.”
