Local man is charged with child abuse

Brookhaven police arrested and charged a Brookhaven man with alleged felony child abuse after being alerted by the Department of Human Resources Thursday.

Curtis L. Spencer Jr., 29, of 322 East Cherokee St., was taken to jail Thursday morning for the alleged abuse of a 7-year-old-child, according to Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell.

The child is related to Spencer, said Chief Bell, although the particular relationship could not be confirmed. The alleged abuse occurred at Spencer’s residence on East Cherokee Street, according to Bell.

Police officers arrested Spencer at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, according to the police report. He is being held without bond. Sgt. Michael Harvey and Lt. Rob Smith were the arresting officers.

The incident is still being investigated, said Bell.
