Jackson Generals defeat M-Braves

PEARL — The Jackson Generals jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first and defeated the Mississippi Braves 10-5 at Trustmark Park Wednesday night. With the series finale victory, Jackson claimed the series 3-games-to-2. The M-Braves now hit the road for a five-game series at Chattanooga.

Mississippi (6-7, 39-42) scored five runs on eight hits while Jackson (6-7, 35-46) plated 10 runs on 12 hits. Rio Ruiz led the M-Braves offensively with a 2-for-4 night at the plate. He scored once and drove in two runs. Matt Kennelly also had two RBI for the Braves.

Ian Miller led off the game with a triple to center field. A Tyler Smith ground out plated Miller, giving the Generals an early 1-0 advantage. DJ Peterson then doubled to right and Dan Paolini walked. Julio Morban then doubled to center, driving home Peterson. Jabari Blash added a RBI-single up the middle before Tyler Marlette doubled down the right-field line. Jabari Henry added a base hit to extend Jackson’s lead to 6-0. Miller came back around to drive home another run and make it 7-0.

The M-Braves responded in the bottom of the frame. Matt Lipka and Kevin Ahrens reached on singles. Ruiz then delivered a two-run double to center field, cutting the Generals lead to 7-2.

In the third, KD Kang walked, Ahrens reached on an error and Ruiz singled to load the bases with one out. Kennelly then delivered a two-run double to center, closing the gap to 7-4. Sean Godfrey later grounded out, allowing Ruiz to score and make it a two-run game.

Jackson extended its lead to 10-5 in the sixth. Luis Caballero singled and Miller reached on a force attempt. Another error allowed Smith to reach safely and load the bases before Peterson drew a walk, bringing home a run. Paolini then ripped a two-run double to left field.

Stephen Janas (0-1) gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out three batters in 4.1 innings of work and took the loss.

Grady Wood (4-1) tossed three innings in relief to pick up the win. Misael Siverio worked three frames and allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk. He fanned two but was not eligible for the win.

The M-Braves travel to Chattanooga for a five-game series against the Lookouts. The M-Braves have not announced Thursday’s starter. First pitch is slated for 6:15 p.m.
