Family provides details in boy’s shooting death

The parents of a boy killed Saturday in an accidental shootingin Lawrence County have provided some details about theincident.

Neal Ballard, 14, was accidentally shot while visiting arelative’s home, Ted and Donna Ballard told The Daily Leader.

The Ballards were concerned that some information provided tothe newspaper by a Lawrence County first responder was notaccurate. Neither the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department nor thecounty coroner would provide details Saturday.

According to the Ballards, another person was in a bedroomputting a shotgun away when it discharged. The blast went throughthe wall into the living room where it struck young Ballard in thehead.

The accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the home ofthe boy’s uncle on the corner of Timberlane and Carmel-New HopeRoads

Services for Ballard were today at Monticello MethodistProtestant Church with burial in Bethshan Cemetery.

He was a student at Monticello Junior High School, where heplayed football, baseball, and was in the band. He was a member ofMonticello Methodist Protestant Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, TadBallard of Starkville; his grandparents, Patsy Walker of Monticelloand Mr. and Mrs. Tom Conn of Ruth; and his great-grandparents,Beulah Neal of Monticello and Ruth Shaffer of Monticello.
