Perkins named to Mississippi team

CLINTON -Brookhaven’s Fred Perkins has been selected to theMississippi roster for the 14th Annual Alabama-Mississippi All-StarClassic. Perkins (6-3, 215) is listed as a defensive back on the36-man squad.

As a senior quarterback at BHS, Perkins rushed for 875 yards andscored 17 touchdowns. He played tight end and wide receiver hissophomore and junior years.

Perkins directed the Panthers to a 7-3 record and a berth in theClass 4A state playoffs. Against Gautier, in the state playoffgame, Perkins was credited with 18 tackles when he replaced aninjured teammate at defensive back.

The All-Star Classic will be played Saturday night, June 16, atLadd-Peebles Memorial Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Serving as head coachfor the Mississippi team is Mike Justice of Madison Central.

Other area players on the squad are running back Thomas Jackson(5-7, 195) of McComb and offensive lineman Cornelius Stallings(6-4, 315) of South Pike. Quarterbacking the team are DamariusBilbo (6-4, 215) of Moss Point and Michael Spurlock (5-11, 190) ofIndianola Gentry.

Also at running back are Sylvester Brown (5-11, 210) of MadisonCentral, Marquez Dupree (6-0, 205) of Philadelphia and Noah Ingram((5-11, 215) of Ruleville Central.

Tight ends are Akeem Lockett (6-3, 230) of Ripley and TremaineMoore (6-2, 190) of Moss Point. Wide receivers are Mike Espy (6-0,180) of Madison Central, John Eubanks (5-11, 160) of Cleveland,Mario Hill (6-1, 195) of Meridian and Cameron Myers (6-2, 200) ofNorthwest Rankin.

Joining Stallings in the offensive line are Billy Garner (6-2,260) of Gulfport, Chris McNeil (6-4, 275) of Petal, Neal Mead (6-5,290) of Collins, Rodney Outlaw (6-2, 290) of Starkville, ChrisSpencer (6-4, 315) of Madison Central, and Johnny Wadley (6-4, 355)of Hernando.

The team’s placekicker is Mike McLaughlin (6-2, 190) of Gautier.The punter is Will Taylor (6-0, 175) of Water Valley.

On defense, the linemen include Thad Henderson (6-0,285) of Warren Central, Chris McNair (6-4, 210) of Gulfport, JeremyRuffin (6-3, 195) of Meridian, Travis Stokes (6-4, 290) of WaterValley, Marcus West (6-3, 230) of Columbus and Kendel Wheeler (6-3,275) of Petal.

Linebackers are Brandon Downing (6-2, 225) ofClarksdale, Derrick Ducksworth (6-2, 225) of Mize and William Gavin(5-11, 235) of Clinton.

Perkins is joined in the defensive backfield by RicoBennett (6-1, 190) of Brandon, Keith Houston (6-4, 210) ofPhiladelphia, Travis Johnson (6-2, 190) of Shannon, ClarenceMcDougal (6-1, 205) of Clinton and Bryant Thomas (6-2, 190) ofLouisville.
