Creeks, rivers and ditches in Lincoln County spilled over theirbanks this weekend as over six inches of rain was dumped on thearea.

Authorities reported flooding in several areas Monday as thetotal rainfall hit 6.62 inches for the weekend. The greatest threatwas when flood waters took over roadways.

“We had water on (Highway) 84 out in the Fair River area,” CivilDefense Director Clifford Galey said. “They were able to unplug thedrain and we got the water drained off, so we did not have to closethe road.”

Other roads in the area did not fair so well, though, headded.

“One bridge was washed out on Oakwood Lane, and that road isstill closed today,” Galey said this morning. “Then there was alsowater over the roads in the normal places that flood.”

Heavy weekend rainfall also forced the closing of Field LarkLane, Cotton Lane, Big Creek Drive, Hog Chain Road, Bethel Road andMill Creek Lane, the sheriff’s department reported.

Anyone who discovers a washed out bridge or road covered bywater should contact the board of supervisors at 835-3423.

Even though the rain has ended, authorities are still advisingdrivers to be cautious and not to drive through flooded areas.

After 21 accidents were reported on area highways Monday andthree on county roads, drivers are also being reminded that safetymeasures should be taken during any amount of rainfall.

“When it rains, people need to slow down,” Galey said.

Many of the accidents occurred on Interstate 55 where water cameclose to spilling over the roadway Monday.

“The water was very close to coming over the interstate at the32 mile marker,” Galey commented. “It had only about a foot to go,but thankfully it quit raining, and we hope it will stop for a fewdays so everything can dry out.”
