McLaurin tops Hornets

STAR – The McLaurin Tigers edged Loyd Star 48-44 Monday night inDivision 6-2A varsity boys basketball action. The Lady Hornets lost54-31 last night.

Sophomore Jared Britt led Loyd Star with 21 points. JamieJohnson chipped in 9 points, Jessie Sones 7, Rufus Humphreys 4 andSidney Chester 3.

The teams battled to a 23-23 halftime deadlock. It was 37-37entering the fourth quarter.

“We had a chance to tie it up when it was 47-44 but we missedtwo 3-point shots,” said Loyd Star coach Gene Britt. “They(officials) called an intentional foul when we were going for theball.”

Britt said McLaurin refused to reschedule the game. Loyd Starwas shorthanded, due to the football playoffs. Two of the Hornets’post players were in early foul trouble last night.

“I was proud of our team,” said Britt. “I thought our kidsplayed well and we look forward to playing them again.”

Loyd Star (2-1, 0-1) resumes play Nov. 29, versus Piney Woods.The game might be postponed due to the football playoffs.

McLaurin (1-4) got 19 points from Keith Brown.

The Lady Hornets (1-2, 0-1) got 10 points and 7 rebounds fromAva Brown and 10 rebounds from Jamakia Henderson. Jordan Britt made3 steals. Loyd Star committed 26 turnovers.

“McLaurin was big and physical,” said Loyd Star coach LoriBritt. “Our youth and inexperience showed.” The Lady Hornetstrailed 25-5 at halftime.

Ashley Evans, a strong 5-10 post player, had 15 points for theLady Tigers.
