McComb shuts out Brook

McCOMB – “McComb found the gaps, when they needed too,” saidBrookhaven head coach Randy Spring following his Panther’s hotlycontested 5-0 Division 6-4A loss to the McComb Tigers Tuesday nightat Rotary Field.

Spring was referring to the 5-run sixth inning explosion byMcComb which was the deciding factor in the contest.

McComb defeated Brookhaven 9-1 in the preliminary JV game.

Brookhaven hosts Raymond in a make-up divisional test onThursday. A single varsity game begins at 3:30 p.m.

“Both teams played an outstanding game,” said McComb head coachChuck Freeman following the game. “Both pitchers threw a great gameand were in control throughout the game.”

Freeman was referring to the Tigers’ Pat Barnes and Brookhaven’sBrooks Hall.

Barnes, a sophomore, picked up the complete game win, as heallowed no runs on just 2 hits. He issued 2 bases on balls andstruck out 6 Brookhaven batters.

Hall, a sophomore, suffered the loss for the Panthers. Heallowed 5 earned runs on 8 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 5.

“Twenty-six (Barnes’ number) battled out there tonight,” addedFreeman. “He wants the ball in his hands, in the heat of thebattle.”

The game was scoreless for 5 1/2 innings. McComb came to bat inthe bottom of the sixth to score the winning runs.

McComb first baseman Jesse Boyd singled and stole second. Twobatters later, Barnes was intentionally walked. Designated hitterChris Reid singled to load the bases. Rightfielder Brandon Erwindoubled off the center field wall to score Boyd and Barnes. Twobatters later, pinch-hitter Justin Hay singled to score Reid.Centerfielder Jarrod Dyson doubled to score Erwin and Hay.

“30’s (Erwin) double off the wall was the key to the ballgame,”said Spring. “Both teams hit the ball hard tonight. Both pitcherspitched a great game.”

Erwin led the Tiger offensive with a double, a run scored and 2RBIs. Dyson doubled and had 2 RBIs.

Brookhaven got singles from seniors Ben Goza and Kern Hoff.

In the JV game, Brookhaven was led by Corey Smith with asingle and a run scored. Reggie Smith, Josh Patrick, Cody Dunawaysingled individually. Brent Hinton suffered the loss for thePanthers.

Chris Reid picked up the win for McComb. The Tigers wereled by Garry Hart with 2 singles and a run scored.
