Loyd Star, Cathedral grab golf titles

WESSON – The Natchez Cathedral Green Wave won the Class 1A StateGolf Tournament championship Wednesday, led by tournament medalistStephen Hollingsworth who shot 77-74–151 at the Wolf Hollow GolfClub.

Cathedral, the Class 2A state champion last year, beat runner-upWest Union by six strokes, 647-653, in the 2-day tournament.Hollingsworth was followed by teammate Mark Carter at 155.

In Class 2A, Loyd Star’s Hornets cruised to their first-evertitle, led by freshman Josh Wright’s 75-83-158. The Hornets beatrunner-up Baldwyn by 18 strokes, 642-660, and posted the best teamscore of the windy, 2-day tournament.

Other Loyd Star scores featured Trent Maddox at 85-75-160, BlakeWindham at 81-80-161, Jody Britt at 81-82-163, and Chris Hester96-83-179.

Baldwyn’s Nick Armstrong was tournament medalist with a75-78-153 on the hilly, 6,365-yard, par-72 course. Maddox, Windhamand Wright represented Loyd Star on the All-State Tournament team.Also making the team were Trae Belk (161) of Mooreville and BrentMcMillian (162) of Newton.

Leland Hinton of Wesson was among the individual participants inthe Class 2A competition. Hinton had a 2-day total of89-79-168.
