Brookhaven 3.0 women in USTA State

Doris Panzica knows her tennis. She has been team captain forfive years, leading the Brookhaven Country Club squad.

Panzica will lead a group of Level 3.0 women to Jackson thisweek. They begin play in the USTA Adult Team State Tournament onThursday. Over 1,000 players, including 98 teams from across theMagnolia State, will be competing for a berth in the SectionalTournament, July 20-28, in Louisville, Ky.

“We are excited about this team,” said Panzica. “We were 12-0 indistrict play.”

Brookhaven’s district competition came from Monticello, McComband Natchez.

Members of the Brookhaven squad are Dwana Wright, Sandy Barker,Dee Dee Henning, Tanya Hamill, Carolyn Rounsaville, Nikki Henning,Christy Rounsaville, Carol Haley, Harriett Proffitt, Lee AnnaCrozier and Debbie Thomas.

Four team members went to the state seniors tournament inGreenville last month. They were Panzica, Rounsaville, Haley andProffitt. The team roster also included Lu Jean Harvey, Pat Clark,Agnes May, Agnes Carey and Peggy Polk of Lawrence County. Theyplaced second, defeating Jackson and Greenville.

Gulf Coast won the senior tournament.

At state this week, Panzica believes her team will face itsstrongest competition from Jackson-area squads. “The Jackson teamsare always strong.”

Each sweat-soaked round will consist of two singles matches andthree doubles matches. Wright and Crozier head the list ofBrookhaven singles players.

Panzica said she tries to rotate the doubles pairings. “We wantto work everybody in. I want to give everybody a chance toplay.

“We are very happy to represent our area in this competition,”said Panzica. “We look forward to the tournament.”
