Co-Lin sweeps Coahoma

WESSON – The Co-Lin men desperately needed a win after twolosses and they got it Monday night in Mullen Gymnasium. TheWolves, led by sophomore guard Jason Scott’s 26 points and sevenrebounds, handed the Coahoma Community College Tigers an 82-71beating.

In the women’s game, the 3-0 Lady Wolves put on a basketballclinic for the Lady Tigers as they whipped the visitors by 68points, 107-39.

The 1-2 Wolves led by as much as 10 points in the second half,after trailing by one point, 47-46, at the half. The Tigers trimmedthe deficit to three points, 74-71 with 2:27 left in the game.

Co-Lin sophomore guard Jerimie Collier hit a pair of free throwsand freshman guard Jeremy Richardson followed with a quick layupfor a six point, 78-71 lead.

Coahoma began turning the ball over and was getting beaten byCo-Lin on the boards. Scott sailed through the air for a two-handeddunk with 45 seconds left to get a roar from the crowd and an 80-71lead. Nick Mikell went 1 for-2 from the charity line in the final 9seconds to secure the 82-71 win.

“We are very happy to win,” said Co-Lin men’s head coach DennisSims following the game. “It was to a point we would have liked towin better. It was ugly but we won.”

Adding support to the win with 19 points, five rebounds, fourassists and two steals was Collier. Jeremy Richardson finished with10 points. Derrick Jarvis made four steals and had fourassists.

The 1-2 Tigers, coached by James Washington, got 27 points fromfreshman forward Tracy Hughes. Tamarrius Brown, a sophomore guard,followed with 14 points, three steals and three assists. ChrisThomas netted 15 points.

Co-Lin 107, Coahoma 39

The only time the game was close was in the opening minutes. TheLady Wolves’ hungry offense and greedy defense worked on the LadyTigers in the first half for a lopsided 51-20 lead.

In the second half, Co-Lin outscored Coahoma 56-19.

“It was a good game,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young.””Everybody got to play. The least time a player had was sevenminutes.

“It’s always fun when everyone gets to play,” continuedYoung.

Sophomore guard Tiania Burns powered the Lady Wolves on thecourt with a game-high 27 points. Burns also collected sevenrebounds, made three steals and had four assists. Freshman forwardLoretta Martin pumped in 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, madefour steals and had four assists.

Adding support to the Co-Lin win with 12 points was VictoriaRichardson. Lindsey Altman and Shaquita Smith followed with 11points apiece. Smith also grabbed five rebounds. Ayme Beeson ledwith seven assists and two steals.

The top scorer for Coach Shirley Artis’ 1-2 Lady Tigers wassophomore forward Jennifer Nelson with 11 points and threerebounds. Genita Brown finished with nine points, three reboundsand five assists.

Co-Lin travels to Holmes Thursday night.
