Bateman honored; BHS eludes McComb

Senior catcher Megan Bateman was honored in a pregame ceremonyMonday night at home plate, recognizing her softballaccomplishments as a Brookhaven Lady Panther. The only senior onBrookhaven’s team was moved to tears as a tape recording was playedover the public address system and teammates shared their personalfeelings.

Bateman also had a hand in Brookhaven’s 2-1 victory over McComb,scoring both runs in the Division 6-4A fastpitch contest at theHansel King Sportsplex. She also singled as the Lady Panthersovercame a 1-0, first-inning deficit.

“We will definitely miss Megan Bateman,” said BHS head coachLisa Covington. “It was good to win our last home game. We had agreat year.”

The Lady Panthers (15-5, 6-4) missed out on making the stateplayoffs. They conclude their season today, making up a rained outgame at Vicksburg Warren Central.

McComb scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning.Brookhaven tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.Bateman stole a base and scored on a dribbler in front of the plateby Ashley Sykes. Brittany Smith had the other BHS hit.

Sykes was the winning pitcher with a 5-hitter. She struck out 8batters, walked 3 and hit 1 batter. The Lady Panthers only made 1error.

Losing hurler Kristin Murrell fanned 7 batters, walked 4, hit 1batter and scattered 3 hits.

The Lady Tigers got singles from Murrell, Mandie Reed, AllysonCasciola, Kelly Rayle and Page Fleming.

In the JV game, Brookhaven beat McComb 1-0.Smith (3-5) was the winning pitcher. Brittany Bateman singled.
