Poll workers and managers attended a meeting Monday night totrain them in the techniques and procedures they will use Nov. 2 tooversee voting in Lincoln County.
A second training session will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at thecourthouse for workers unable to attend the Monday session.
The training session is open to the public, and District OneElection Commissioner John Hightower encouraged anyone interestedin the electoral process to attend.
Monday’s meeting was primarily the precinct managers, he said, and hosted nearly 40 people. Tonight’s meeting will explain thepolicies and procedures for other poll workers.
“It was mainly the managers last night. Tonight will be the bignight,” Hightower said, adding that each precinct typically hasfive to six poll workers assigned to it.
For many poll workers, this year’s training session was scarcelydifferent from others. The only major change in the voting processthis year, he said, is that some first-time voters will be requiredto show identification.
“That’s about the only thing that’s new,” he said.
Juniors and seniors of county schools participating in theStudent Poll Worker Program also attended Monday night’s trainingsession. The program is designed to encourage young people to voteby allowing them to participate in the process and see firsthandhow the system works. Approximately 25 students, a majority fromBrookhaven High School, attended the session.
