TYLERTOWN — Lawrence County traveled to Walthall County Tuesdaynight to take on Tylertown in their third and final basketballmeeting of the season.

Both teams met at Lawrence County and in the BrookhavenInvitational Tournament.

The Lady Chiefs and Cougars claimed victories to sweep the3-game set. Tylertown defeated the Lawrence County Lady Cougars71-52, while Lawrence County came from behind to escape the Chiefs56-49.

Lawrence County resumes play Dec. 7 for their initial Division6-4A test, at Terry.

Both teams realized a 9-9 deadlock at the end of the firstquarter.

The Lady Chiefs, coached by Cynthia Magee, began to pull away inthe second. Outscoring LCHS 19-12 in the quarter, Magee’s squadcarried a 28-21 advantage into the halftime lockerroom. StephanieDillon scored 8 of her team-high 17 points in the second.

“We are still committing too many turnovers,” said Lady Cougarhead coach Jennie Vance whose ballclub committed 27 turnovers inthe contest. “We must stay out of foul trouble. We are starting togel.”

The Lady Cougars (1-6) tried to mount a comeback in the finalstanza, behind the combination of senior guards Ronesha Garner andBrittany Sherman. They both combined for 17 of LCHS’s 21 points inthe period. But the turnovers continued as the Lady Chiefs pickedup the win.

Garner led the way for LCHS with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 2steals. Sherman pumped in a season-high 11 points and 2 steals.Jasmine Courtney pulled down 10 rebounds and dished out 4assists.

Tylertown’s boys, coached by Laverne Lee, came out of thestarting blocks with authority. The Chiefs took advantage ofnumerous fouls and turnovers by LCHS, to take a 19-14 lead into thesecond quarter. Travis Conerly and Revas Jackson led the way with 7points each.

The Cougars (7-1) dialed long distance in the second frame.Treys from Dominique West, Ricky Wallace and David Clark pulledLCHS within 3 points, 32-29 at the intermission break.

The Chiefs led by as much as 7 points in the second half;carrying a 42-38 advantage into the final 8 minutes.

Cougar head coach Bobby Lee’s patented defensive pressure beganto produce some dividends in the fourth as LCHS mounted a comeback.West’s second trey of the game garnered a 47-47 deadlock with 3:40left in the game. Clark’s old-fashioned 3-point play gave theCougars their first lead at 50-47 with nearly 3 minutes left on theclock.

Clark finished with a game-high 24 points, 10 rebounds. Alsolending support were J.P. Lewis with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 3blocked shots and 2 steals. Ray Collins added 4 steals and 6assists.

The Chiefs were led by Jackson and Conerly with 18 and 16 pointsrespectively.
