St. Andrew’s rallies past Loyd Star

The host Loyd Star Hornets dropped a pair of Division 6-2Avarsity games to the St. Andrew’s Saints Tuesday night.

The St. Andrew’s boys pulled out a tough 71-67 win over LoydStar in the final seconds of the game.The Lady Hornets wereoutscored 46-28 in the second half and fell to the Lady Saints64-55.

Loyd Star travels to Wesson Friday night for a key divisionmatchup. Four games are on tap, beginning with the junior highgirls at 4 p.m.

St. Andrew’s 71, Loyd Star 67

Trey Frasier, a 6-2 junior, sank the go-ahead field goal with 6seconds left to play, making a baseline drive. The Saints reboundedFrasier’s missed free throw and put it back in for the 4-pointmargin of victory.

“We played well the whole ballgame until right there at theend,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “We had someturnovers which hurt us.

“St. Andrew’s has a very good team and they are big inside,”said Britt. “Frasier is one of the best shooter’s I’ve seen. Hemade some long threes.”

Brent Smith, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound center who is headed forVanderbilt on a football scholarship, dominated the inside for theSaints.

The Hornets (12-3, 0-2) were led by guard Tyler Williford’s 32points. Dewayne Branning had a career-high 22 points.

On the backboards, Williford had 8 rebounds, followed by DrewCase with 5 boards and Brent Fells 4. Kordae Otis made 2steals.

St. Andrew’s 64, Loyd Star 55

The Loyd Star girls (7-8, 0-2) led St. Andrew’s 16-14 inthe first quarter and went ahead 28-19 at the half.

“The 21-day layoff hurt us,” said Loyd Star girls coachLori Britt. “St. Andrew’s shot well from the outside. They had agreat third quarter. They hit six 3-pointers in thatquarter.”

A 29-16 scoring run by St. Andrew’s turned the gamearound as the visitors took a 47-43 lead in the finalframe.

High scorer of the game was Loyd Star senior point guardJordan Britt with 26 points. Hailey Ratcliff fired in 18 points,grabbed nine rebounds and had two assists. Shara Johnson followedwith 10 points and 10 rebounds. Britt added six steals and twoassists.

Rachel Sanders powered St. Andrew’s with 18 points,including six 3-pointers. LaReina Adams netted 17 points. EleanorHanlon followed with 14 points and Maeve Wilson had10.

Junior varsity

Dakota Brooks scored 15 points as the Loyd Star juniorvarsity girls team fell to St. Andrew’s 31-21. Sally Muskett hadnine points for St. Andrew’s.
