Panthers hammer Wingfield 15-0, 11-0

The defending Class 4A state champion Brookhaven Panthers got abalanced offensive and defensive effort Friday in their Division6-4A doubleheader sweep over Wingfield at Moyer Field. Ole Brookfostered a pair of no-hitter shutouts, winning the opener 15-0 in 3innings and the nightcap 11-0 in 5 innings.

With the sweep, Brookhaven improves to 12-10 overall and 7-4 inthe division. Wingfield falls to 0-17 and 0-11.

The Panthers host North Pike Tuesday for a junior varsity andvarsity doubleheader; beginning at 5 p.m. Brookhaven closesdivision play Friday at McComb.

Brookhaven 15, Wingfield 0

The Panthers got a perfect game from Cole Newell (3-1). He threw3 innings, allowing no runs, hits or walks with 4 strikeouts.

Ole Brook took a 5-0 lead in the first as Zach Watson, JacobDunn, Grant McDonnieal, Brandt Hinton and Mitch Pappas. Watsondoubled. Pappas and Paxton King each singled in the inning as thePanthers sent 11 batters to the plate.

Wingfield, coached by Eric Lantrip, committed 8 errors in thegame with 4 each coming in the first and third innings.

Brookhaven reached the final margin of victory in the third,scoring 10 runs and sending 13 batters to the plate. All 9positions in the batting order scored a run. King scored twice.T.J. Qualls, R.J. Jenkins, Darius Perkins, Garion Crockett,McDonnieal, Hinton, Pappas and Elliot Warren crossed homeplate.

Pappas led the offensive charge with a single, a double and 2runs scored. Watson and Crockett doubled. Jenkins, McDonnieal andKing each singled.

Aubrey Brownlow suffered the loss for the Falcons, Brownlowpitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing 5 runs on 3 hits with 1walk and no strikeouts Jon Van and Terrance McGee saw action on themound.

Brookhaven 11, Wingfield 0

Josh Coone (3-2) threw a no-hitter, allowing 2 base-runners on awalk and a passed ball. Coone threw 5 innings, issuing 1 base onballs and fanning 13 Wingfield batters.

Ole Brook opened the scoring in the first, plating 4 runs with 1in the second, 2 in the third and 4 in the fourth.

Panther head coach Randy Spring rested his starters from theprevious game. Guy Orr paced Ole Brook with a single, a double, 2stolen bases and 2 runs scored. Cody Ratcliff and Marlon Dixon eachscored twice. Ratcliff, Taylor Newman and Dixon each singled.Newman tripled. Warren doubled.

“Cole and Josh threw well today, both getting no-hitters,” saidSpring. “We got a good balance today on both sides of theball.”

Wingfield used 4 pitchers in the game. Al Williams was creditedwith the loss. Chris Hunter, Brownlow and McGee came on inrelief.
