E. Webster eludes BC

MABEN — East Webster pushed home the winning run in the bottomof the seventh inning and clipped Bogue Chitto’s Lady ‘Cats 1-0Monday in the South State 1A championship finals . The LadyWolverines had split Saturday’s twinbill at Bogue Chitto, losingthe opener 3-2 but rebounding to win the nightcap 5-2.
East Webster (22-11) advances to the state championship seriesagainst Ingomar (22-4), the North 1A champion.
Bogue Chitto (20-9), coached by Scott Leggett, ends its seasonon a losing note.
Pitcher Kate Moreland (13-7) held the Lady ‘Cats to 1 hit, aseventh-inning, 2-out single by Kelli Howard. Moreland, a DeltaState signee, fanned 12 batters and walked 2.
The Lady Wolverines got 3 hits off losing pitcher Meleah Brownwho struck out 6 batters and walked 5.
“East Webster has a great team,” said Coach Leggett. “I knew itwould come down to a decisive play. They were on the good end ofthe deal.
“It’s a tough loss,” said Leggett. “Our girls did an excellentjob. We have accomplished a lot in these last two years inslowpitch and fastpitch. We’ve played in three South Statechampionships and won two of them.”
Brown is the only senior on BC’s team.
Moreland scored the winning run. She stole third base and racedhome on an error.
In other state fastpitch championship action, Oak Grove (22-0-3)meets Madison Central (30-1-1) in Class 5A; East Central (29-6)faces Neshoba Central (21-8) in Class 4A; Morton (25-6) meetsMooreville (22-7) in Class 3A, and Clarkdale (23-5) plays Eupora(27-4) in Class 2A.
