Volunteers today will be at Bicentennial Park preparing toinstall new playground equipment Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We think it will be a three-day project to get it all set up,”said volunteer Rusty Adcock.

Adcock, as a member of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber ofCommerce’s Cooperative Community Program, helped get the grant tofund the improvements.

Volunteers will work primarily on setting equipment foundationstoday and will set up the equipment during the next two days, hesaid.

“We’re hoping the community will come out and help,” Adcocksaid. “We look at this as a bonding project that can unify thecommunity. Our need for volunteers will be more pressing the nexttwo days.”

He asked that anyone interested in volunteering to help come tothe park Tuesday and Wednesday. Work will begin each day around 8a.m.

Adcock said the CCP committee last year set the parkimprovements as a priority and worked to secure grants to fund thenew equipment.

The Mississippi Development Authority provided more than $80,000to purchase the equipment, said Cliff Brumfield, chamber executivedirector.

The total project is estimated at $120,000, including the laborprovided by volunteers. The city administers the grant.

Committee members concentrated on providing equipment that wasfun, but safe, he said. A great deal of attention was paid to thesurroundings and materials used.

“We tried to get something for all ages,” Adcock said, “so thereare slides, swings, some climbing equipment and other things.”
