Services for Joseph Edward Phillips, of Brookhaven, will be 10a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 1, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Churchwith burial at Riverwood Memorial Park.
Visitation is Monday from 2 until 7 p.m. with a Rosary beginningat 7 p.m. at Brookhaven Funeral Home.
Joseph Edward Phillips, 87, died July 29, 2006, peacefully athis home surrounded by his family. Joe was born in Memphis, Tenn.,on April 16, 1919. Joe and Gloria were residents of Brookhaven for58 years where he and his brothers owned and operated PhillipsBrothers Lumber Co. He also owned and operated Phillips-Lamb LumberCo., of Tylertown.
He was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi CatholicChurch. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where heserved as president.
Joe was active in his church and community. He was a pastpresident of the Mississippi Pine Manufacturers Association and theLion’s Club of Brookhaven. He also was president and coached littleleague baseball in Brookhaven. He was a charter member of Boy ScoutTroop 122. Joe was a Navy Veteran and served his country duringWorld War II.
His wife of 60 years, Gloria Maxwell Phillips, and his daughter,Gloria Gayle Phillips Sherman, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his sons and daughters and their spouses:Thomas Jackson and his wife, Teresa; Karen Phillips Labat and herhusband, Cyrus; Joan Phillips Schutzle and her husband, Douglas;Gary Michael; Kenneth Ernest; and John Joseph and his wife, Judy.His is also survived by his brother, Thomas Richard Phillips andhis wife, Jean, of Brookhaven, and his sister-in-law, Evelyn FlynnPhillips of Brookhaven. Joe and Gloria are also survived by 15grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 27 nieces andnephews.
