Raleigh, Wesson capture boys titles

WESSON — Henry Washington pumped in 37 points and CorneliusDenson added 30 as the Raleigh Lions outscored Loyd Star 89-80Saturday in the championship boys finals of Pool A.

In Pool B of the Wesson Invitational championship, the hostCobras whipped Natchez Cathedral 64-48, powered by Brandt Hood’s 20points, 4 seals and 3 assists. Cody King chipped in 16 points, 6rebounds and 2 assists.

Hood and Denson were named Most Valuable Players in theirrespective pools.

Wesson 64, Cathedral 48

The Cobras (9-7) charged to a 31-15 halftime lead over the GreenWave. Wesson got 9 rebounds from Matthew Cliburn. Josh Hart had 6rebounds and 2 assists.

“We played together as a team and multiple players contributedto the win,” said Wesson boys coach Ron Kessler. “Juan Gray is agood player but we managed to control him in the second half.”

Gray accounted for 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals in theloss. Geoffrey Martin netted 11 points as the Wave fell to 8-9 onthe season.

“We weren’t able to score in the second quarter and that did usin,” said Cathedral coach Peter Arnold. “Wesson did a good jobcontrolling the tempo of the game.”

Wesson outscored the Wave 16-5 in the second quarter and claimeda 31-15 halftime lead.

Raleigh 89, Loyd Star 80

Loyd Star led 41-36 at halftime before the Lions caught fire.Raleigh’s Paul Black joined Washington and Denson in double figureswith 14 points and added 7 rebounds. Chris Lofton had 10assists.

“We played sloppy,” said Raleigh coach Jason Kennedy whose Lionsare 15-1 on the season and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. “I have greatrespect for (Loyd Star) Coach (Gene) Britt. He always gets his teamready to play.”

The Hornets (8-5) were directed by center Rickey Barnes whoscored 21 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Matthew Henderson followedwith 19 points, 5 steals and 3 assists.

“We played Raleigh tough,” said Coach Britt. “We hustled,rebounded and limited their fast break. We played well against theNo. 1 team in Class 3A.”

McKinley Hamilton and Ron Jones each scored 10 points for theHornets.

Losers Bracket

In the boys losers bracket, North Pike knocked off Vicksburg St.Aloysius 61-51 in Pool A. Dexter held off Enterprise for a 64-61win in Pool B.

Dexter 64, Enterprise 61

Coach Josh Bass’ Enterprise boys were led by Andrew Williamswith 19 points. Scoring 16 points was Tanner Delcambre.

Terrance Marks sparked Dexter with 15 points. Netting 12 pointswas Carlos Crumedy. Nathan Brooks followed with 11 points.

North Pike 61, St. Aloysius 51

In the other boys game in the losers bracket, Albert Williamsdirected North Pike with 18 points. Jeremy Armstrong finished with14 points. Phillip McCray had 13 points followed by Clifton Youngwith 12.

St. Al got 17 points from Chase Smith. Marsh Willis and ShaunJohnson netted 11 points apiece.
