Copiah, BA Cougars host tough opponents

The Brookhaven Academy Cougars make their home debut Fridaynight when they host the Oak Forest Yellow Jackets. The game beginsat 7 p.m.

In other area academy action, defending Class AA state champCopiah hosts Leake and Parklane entertains Centreville for itsfirst game at home.

In last Friday night’s action, Centreville knocked offBrookhaven 27-14, Copiah shut out Bowling Green (La.)17-0 and OakForest (La.) stuffed Parklane 32-14.

Brookhaven (0-1) is looking to regroup afterthe road loss at Centreville Academy last Friday. Coached by BoMilton, the Cougars had first game jitters (bad snaps, droppedpasses and missed blocks) on the road.

“Oak Forest is well coached,” said Milton. “They are very quickand very disciplined. We are going to have to play a lot betterthan we did last week. We have to cut out the mistakes

“We won’t be so nervous or tight,” continued Melton. “We get tocome home and relax. Hopefully, that will help out a little. If weplay better, we’ll put ourselves in a position to win.”

Offensively, Daniel Lofton powered the Cougar offense thattotaled 172 yards. Lofton rushed the football 12 times for 50 yardsand score two touchdowns. In the air, he was 5 for 12 for 88 yardsand was intercepted twice.

Leading the Brookhaven defense with 19 tackles and a sack wasKolby Byrd. Jeremy James finished with 9 stops.

Last year, Brookhaven crushed Oak Forest 29-14.

Copiah (1-0) won their season opener last weekover Bowling Green under first year head coach Scotty Cline..

“Leake is a very good football team,” said Cline. “Theirquarterback is a Division 1 prospect. “They have very big offensivelineman. They fly to the football.

“At times, we looked good last week,” added Cline. “We want tobe more consistent. We have to execute to perfection this week tobeat Leake.”

Leake (1-0) is coming off a huge 38-7 win over Heritage.

In the win over Bowling Green, the Copiah offense was led byDaniel Sims with 12 rushes for 69 yards a touchdown. In the air,Sims was 12-23-1 with a touchdown.

The Colonels also got a 20-yard field goal from RichardHenley.

On defense, Alex Guess led with 11 tackles and a forced fumble.Dustin Merchant made 7 tackles and a sack. Brandon Greer and BryceGuess collected 5 tackles apiece. Recovering a fumble was BenBoone. Intercepting a pass was Ben Stevens.

Copiah and Leake did not play last year.

Parklane (0-1) is looking to bounce back fromlast Friday’s 32-14 loss to Oak Forest. The Pioneers, coached byCharlie Newlon, entertain Centreville Academy next.

Nick Goudeau scored four Centreville Academy touchdowns in itswin over Brookhaven last Friday.

In last season’s games, Parklane whipped Centreville 30-6.
