Broome, Cobras post win over Hornets

WESSON – Tuesday night’s big Region 6-2A baseball matchupbetween the Wesson Cobras and the Loyd Star Hornets came down to abattle between two talented pitchers. When the dust had settled,Wesson senior Caleb Broome (4-1) fanned 7 batters, walked six andallowed no runs on 2 hits to lead the Cobras to a tough 3-0 winover the Hornets.

In the loss, Hornet junior ace Tyler Case (3-2) finished with 6strikeouts, 6 walks, 4 hits allowed and 1 hit batter.

Another big factor was Loyd Star committed 6 errors to Wesson’s1.

“Caleb is a bulldog,” smiled Wesson head coach Hugh Webb after thewin. “He made some good pitches. It was a big win. We’ll have tocome out ready to play Thursday (at Loyd Star). Loyd Star has afine ball club.”

With the win, Wesson improved to 4-0 in the division and 8-5 on theseason. Loyd Star falls to 3-1 in division play and is 11-5 on theseason.

“We just couldn’t come up with the big hits,” said Loyd Star headcoach Jonathan Breakfield. “A couple of hits here and there wouldhave helped.

“Tyler pitched one of his best games all year,” added Breakfield.”We have several guys with injuries right now.”

Following 2.5 innings of scoreless play, Wesson scored 2 runs inthe bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Kyle Cross led off witha single and Paxton Cupit was walked. A sacrifice bunt by Broomeadvance Cross and Cupit to third and second respectively. Gib Brittwent to first on fielder’s choice followed by a Hornet throwingerror and Cross and Cupit scored.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cobras added another run. Pat Boonewas walked, advanced to second then third before scoring on afielder’s choice for the 3-0 lead.

Also singling for Wesson were Matt Smith, Brandon Allen and GageWilson.

Hitting a single each for Loyd Star were T.J. Floyd and BrandenCanny.

Wesson travels to Loyd Star Thursday night for a varsitydoubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

In a related region game, Puckett beat Enterprise 7-5.
