Foster signs pact with Southwest

Brookhaven pitcher Brandon Foster is looking forward to abaseball future with the Southwest Mississippi Community CollegeBears. The hard-throwing southpaw signed scholarship papers withSouthwest Tuesday at the BHS field house.
“I’m glad to get an opportunity to play college baseball,” saidthe 5-foot-7, 140-pound Foster. “I’m excited. Southwest has a goodbaseball program and I like the coaches.”
Foster compiled a 6-2 record as a senior and won 21 games duringhis varsity career. In 2010, Foster produced a stingy 1.36 ERA. Atthe plate, he batted .403, usually playing right field when hewasn’t on the mound. He was named Co-MVP on the BHS squad.
A fierce competitor, Foster can throw a variety of pitches. Hethrows a 2-seam and 4-seam fastball, plus a changeup, slider,curveball. His fastball is in the lows 80s.
He is the son of Barry and Sonya Foster.
Foster said he plans to major in electrical technology. His goalis to eventually become an electrician for an offshore oilcompany.
“Brandon is a competitor and he’s a left-handed pitcher,” saidSouthwest assistant coach Ken Jackson. “We are trying to recruitleft-handers.”
Southwest, under the direction of second-year boss LeeKurykendall, compiled a 25-24 overall record and finished 8-15 inthe South Division.
Ole Brook head coach Randy Spring said he was confident Fosterwould do well at Southwest. “I’m real proud of Brandon. He has alot of heart and determination. He’s improved every year. He’s agreat representative of our program.”
Jackson coaches the pitchers and catchers at Southwest. Alsosigning with the Bears were catchers Austin Terrell of Parklane andTravis Leggett of Enterprise-Lincoln. Kyle Wheeler will bereturning for his sophomore season at Southwest.
“Travis has good size and we like big targets behind the plate,”said Jackson. “I think his best baseball is ahead of him. He has alot of tools you can’t coach. He has the potential to hit forpower, too.”
