Outrage lingers over suspect’s release

Published 7:14 pm Wednesday, June 9, 2010

Dear Editor,

The sounds and voices of anguish and disbelief were heardthroughout the community when the news of David Walker’s releasefrom jail was announced in the June 2 Brookhaven DAILY LEADER. Howmuch evidence is needed to keep offenders off the streets?Allegedly, four bullets were lodged into Mrs. Pullen’s body bybrothers David and Quincy Walker, who were arrested and chargedwith aggravated assault and armed robbery in the incident. Based onwhat has happened, it appears that there is not enough evidence tohold David Walker in jail. Remember that David Walker was alreadyout on bond for another armed robbery arrest in October 2009.

In order to quell this growing discontent, you would think thepublic would be entitled to a brief explanation of “not enoughevidence?” How many incidents does it take? There are two, sofar.

Within the past two weeks there have been thefts and intruderson the private premises in Brookhaven neighborhoods. Our dedicatedpolice force has come to the scenes, but the intruders continue toelude them.

We do not need to put (alleged) criminals back on the streets! Ifeel that our community leaders and Brookhaven citizens have alsoreached this conclusion and will persevere in doing what isnecessary to see that justice is served when crimes arecommitted.

Sincerely,

Mrs. H. C. Samuels

Dear Editor,

Recently we read that one of the men who was arrested forrobbing and shooting Mrs. Eva Pullen in downtown Brookhaven inbroad, open daylight was released for lack of evidence. We alsoread this was not his first time for violating the law. We wereappalled that any judge would let anyone who (allegedly)participated in such a violent act be out on our streets posing adanger to law-abiding citizens.

We, the taxpaying citizens, appreciate our police, sheriff, judges and other public officials who help to protect us fromcriminals. We pray we never get to the place in Brookhaven where wefeel we have to be armed to go shopping, or to visit our neighborswithout fear of being robbed, or losing our life.

Mr. Jacobs, we appreciate The DAILY LEADER keeping us informedabout the good (and sometimes not so good) happening in our townand community. Please ask the judge who issued this ruling toexplain to us in plain English why he made this decision.

Sincerely,

Wesley Kent Sunday School Class,

Dear Editor,

This is the first time I have ever written a letter to theeditor, but when I read in this newspaper of the release from jailof the alleged assailant involved in the senseless shooting of Mrs.Eva Pullen, I was outraged. This gives rise to the suspicion thatthere is something that smells about this situation. Maybe thegrand jury will find where the stench comes from.
