Elkner ‘Cooter’ Smith

Funeral services for Elkner “Cooter” Smith, of Brookhaven, are11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at New Vision Fellowship Church inBrookhaven, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brookhaven.Williams Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Monday from 1 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith, 77, died March 10, 2011, at Hardy Wilson MemorialHospital in Hazlehurst. He was born in Lincoln County on Dec. 29,1933, to Jessie Smith and Mary Cain Smith.

He was retired and was the owner of Fleeting Construction inChicago, Ill., for over 20 years. He was a United States Armyveteran.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers, Joe LouisSmith and Roland Denver “RD” Smith; and his sisters, Velma SmithLee, Jessie Smith, Atrice Smith Hilliard, Annie Ruth Smith Bostonand Doris “Duke” Smith Tyner.

Survivors are his sons, Elkner Shaun Smith, of Dallas, Texas, andPaul T. Smith, of Chicago; his daughters, Angela Michelle Smith andTheresa “Squeaky” Smith Bates, both of Chicago; his sister, Maseree”Biddie” Smith Lewis, of Brookhaven; his sister-in-law, ArtheretteSmith, of Brookhaven; nine grandchildren; and several nephews,nieces, and other relatives and friends.
