While family members were inside Walmart, a Monticello man allegedly tried to find some cash in a purse taken from a woman in the store’s parking lot.

Assistant Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell said a woman, who was pushing another woman in a wheelchair, had her purse snatched by a man around 8:04 p.m. Thursday.

“He ran up to her and snatched her purse from under her arm,” Bell said.

Bell said some “good citizens” were alerted to the incident and chased the man around the parking lot.

The suspect eventually got in a car and fled to a nearby restaurant. Bell said the vehicle’s description was relayed to police via a cellphone.

“We located him in the McDonalds parking lot and he was apprehended there,” Bell said.

Reginald McDaniel, 21, of 19 James Showers Lane, Monticello, was arrested and charged with strong armed robbery. He remained in the Lincoln County Jail Friday morning.

There were no firearms involved in the incident, Bell said.

The assistant chief praised the efforts of the citizens who came to the robbery victim’s rescue.

“Citizens saw what was going on and ran to her aid,” Bell said. “That’s a good thing.”
