“It’s been a long summer and we are anxious to get started,” said Davis. “The kids got a break last week and we got a break from them.”

Most of the players were enrolled in summer school since June and participated in volunteer workouts, featuring weight training and running.

Co-Lin finds itself in a massive rebuilding campaign. Wide receivers Christian “Bubba” Keene and Casey Gladney are two returning vets on offense, along with running back Van Lee.

The Co-Lin offensive line lost five starters. Defensive lineman Xavier Dampeer has been moved to center on offense.

Defensively, safety Greg Sims and Kalen Jackson return to the secondary. Linebackers Jordan Harris and Jamall Ellis have experience. Carroll Phillips and Anthony Cunningham anchor the front line.

Davis, 53, is starting his 10th season as Co-Lin’s head coach. He said the players would practice once a day through Friday. After the first three days, the team will alternate once daily and twice daily workouts. The first day of school is Aug. 19.

The squad must be reduced to 55 active team members and a 10-member practice squad before the first game, Aug. 29. The Wolfpack will host the Northeast Tigers in Stone Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Co-Lin’s assistant coaches are Robert McFarland, offensive coordinator, o-line; Calvin Green, secondary; Bill Hemingway, running backs; Otis Yelverton, defensive coordinator; Maurice Johnson, linebackers; and Dan Reich, special teams.
