The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars and coach Ron Kessler got their 2020-2021 basketball season started Monday night in John. R. Gray Gymnasium by hosting Parklane Academy in their annual Pink Out Game.
Prior to tip, the school honored five breast cancer survivors during a ceremony on the court.
When play began, BA kept Parklane off the scoreboard for the entire first quarter on the way to a 53-25 win.
Junior Abby Grace Richardson led all scorers with 21 points and seven rebounds. Makayla Martin and Lillie Gates chipped in seven points apiece for the Lady Cougars and Kyla Armistad added five points off the bench.
BA was shorthanded as six members of the 15-person varsity team were out with COVID-19 related absences.
After leading 13-0 after the opening eight minutes the Lady Cougars pulled ahead to a 27-7 halftime lead.
“Bench play was big for us tonight,” said Kessler. “All nine who dressed out tonight scored.”
A Nov. 10 home matchup against Lamar Christian is next up on the schedule for BA.
