Residents of Silver Creek are urged to evacuate immediately due to a broken gas pipeline.

Lawrence County deputies are routing people out of town as a precautionary measure.

“There has been no fire or explosion and this is a precautionary measure,” Sheriff Ryan Everett said via an online statement.

He also cautioned people not to try to “ride through and sight-see,” because roadways in are being closed and traffic rerouted.

At least one main pipeline was struck by a piece of equipment along Stephens Cemetery Road, Everett said.

“No injuries, no fire or explosions, nothing like that,” the sheriff said, and he would like to keep it that way.

What began as a one-mile radius evacuation around the intersection of Hwy. 43 and Stephens Cemetery Road has been extended to the city limits.
