BHS Panthers top Terry, LS sweeps region foe Amite County

Four area schools were able to avoid wet weather on Thursday to get games in and here’s a recap of those matchups.

Brookhaven High 16, Terry High 6

Coach Mandy Vinson and her Brookhaven High softball team have won three of their last four after beating Terry High on the road Thursday in Hinds County.

Catcher Jayonna Pendleton bats leadoff for the Panthers and she had a big night at the plate, driving in three runs on three hits. Sophomore Anna Kaitlyn Dooley had two RBIs for BHS while Vivi Claire Porter and Jenna Fuller had an RBI apiece.

Both Dooley and Journi Hunt each hit a double for the Panthers. Addi Tucker pitched the win for Brookhaven High, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven in just over six innings of play.

The win moves BHS to 6-4 on the season. Region play started on Tuesday for the Panthers as they lost 15-0 at Florence High. They’ll return to region action on Tuesday, March 19 when BHS visits North Pike.

 

Loyd Star 19, Amite County 0

Loyd Star 18, Amite County 0

Loyd Star piled up the runs by winning two games on Thursday to begin Region 7-2A play against the visiting Amite County Trojans.

The Hornets are now 6-5 after the two wins. Freshman Adi Holcomb drove in five runs in the game one victory that took three innings. Holcomb, Ainsley Gennaro, Kaylin Hester, Layla Burt, and Madison McKenzie each hit a double for coach John Smith in the win.

Senior Abby Burnette, a Copiah-Lincoln CC signee, also hit a triple for the Hornets. Hester and Avery Sellers had two RBIs each in game one. Freshman pitcher Layla Burt did not give up a hit while striking out six of the 10 batters she faced.

Game two was much of the same as Burnette and Kenzie Kay Lofton each drove in four runs to pace the Hornet offense. Burnette hit a double and LS also got a two RBI effort at the dish from Maddie Kate Britt.

Burt again didn’t give up a hit in three innings, but this time she was perfect, striking out all nine batters she faced while not giving up a hit or a walk.

 

Lawrence County 11, West Lincoln 2

Lawrence County went up 2-0 after the first inning on Thursday at West Lincoln and never trailed as the visitors from Monticello outhit the Bears10-3 and were also benefited from five errors by the home team.LC is 4-6 after the win while the loss drops WL to 6-6 on the year. Sophomore Erika Lambert drove in three runs on three hits for the Cougars, including a pair of doubles. Fellow sophomore Marleigh Grace Russell also had a double herself for head coach Alexandria Harris-Roberson. Sophomore Addie Raye Pennington had a two RBI day at the plate for the Cougars.

Junior Lacie Bridges picked up the win in the pitching circle. She scattered three hits, gave up two earned runs, walked two and struck out two for the Cougars.

Sophomore Kaylee Wallace, sophomore Baleigh Griffith and seventh grader Kolby Rose Thornton were responsible for the three West Lincoln hits. Thornton and sophomore Caroline Hedgepeth were responsible for an RBI each for WL coach Anita Thornton.

The Bears will get region play started on March 19 by hosting Bogue Chitto in a Region 7-2A matchup.
