Brookhaven Academy senior Shelby Coleman is a shining star at Brookhaven Academy taking leadership roles both in and outside of the classroom.

She has attended BA since kindergarten and is active in student organizations. Currently she is serving as president of the student council.

Coleman said that she decided to run for Student Council Vice-President at the end of her sophomore year.

“I wanted to push myself to be a better and more involved leader at my school,” she said.

Coleman was selected as a delegate to the Southwest Mississippi Electric Power Association Youth Leadership Conference last summer in Washington D.C. Over 1,600 high school juniors from across the nation participated in the week-long conference to learn about cooperatives, rural electrification, the city and government. The conferences focus was on building leadership skills they could take back to their schools and communities.

“My trip to D.C. for the EPA Leadership Conference was a great learning experience. It taught me many leadership skills and showed me how to work with others who are pursuing similar goals and leadership opportunities,” said Coleman.

Coleman was also selected as a delegate to the APEX Leadership Conference at the University of Mississippi where she participated in leadership skill training and community service opportunities. She was also chosen as one of 12 students in Mississippi for the Generation FREE Youth Advisory Board. Generation FREE, a youth-led tobacco prevention program, is sponsored by The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi and the Mississippi Department of Health.

Coleman is a member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Positive Choices Club, Science Club and Book Club. Shelby has been a volunteer at Brookhaven Animal Rescue League and Southern Care, active in church activities, and represented her school at youth conferences.

Coleman is the daughter of Roxanne Coleman of Union Church and Alan Coleman of Hazlehurst.
