A fatal accident on Interstate 55 in Summit claimed the lives of 27-year-old Brookhaven woman, Danielle Harris, and 24-year-old Hazlehurst man, Courtney Maxwell, Saturday morning.

Public Affairs Officer for Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M Brandon Fortenberry said MHP troopers responded to the accident at 6:32 a.m. Saturday morning at mile marker 21.

Initial investigation reports from the accident puts a 2012 Dodge Avenger driven by Kevin Haynes, 32, of Brookhaven traveling north on I-55. Fortenberry said that near the 21 mile marker in Summit there was a 2013 Freightliner with an empty box trailer parked on the right shoulder. The Dodge drifted over the white line and came into contact with the trailer, with the car eventually coming to its final rest in the median.

Both Harris and Maxwell, passengers in the Dodge, were pronounced dead on the scene. Haynes was transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center and is currently in moderate condition. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jack Brunson, 55, of Texas, had no injuries.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation officers helped with traffic. Fortenberry said that section of the interstate was shut down until 11 a.m. with a detour around to Highway 51.

Fortenberry said officers are still investigating what caused the car to drift past the white line.
