Two people, including a Monticello man, were killed on state highways over the Memorial Day weekend.

Christopher Ryan Dingler, 30, was killed in a one-vehicle crash late Sunday on Hwy. 84 in Lawrence County, said Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Dingler was traveling west on Hwy. 84 near the Pearl River when his 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck left the road and overturned several times, Fortenberry said.

Dingler was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County coroner, he said.

The other fatal crash over the weekend occurred on Hwy. 12 Holmes County Saturday morning.

James K. Bullocks, 21, of Lexington, was traveling west when his 2002 Honda Civic left the roadway and collided with a tree, said Capt. Johnny Poulos with MHP.

Bullocks was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash, he said.

Both crashes remain under investigation by MHP.

MHP concluded its 2017 Memorial Day enforcement period and the “Drive to Survive” safety initiative at midnight, Monday. The safety enforcement period began Friday at 6 p.m.

Over the 54-hour-long period, MHP issued 5,483 citations and made 110 DUI arrests. A total of 122 crashes were investigated, including the two fatalities and 34 injuries on state and federal highways and the interstate systems.

Results of the “Drive to Survive” campaign show a reduction in crashes and injuries compared to Memorial Day weekend 2016, Poulos said.

All available troopers were utilized statewide during the period conducting saturation patrols and safety checkpoints.

Troop M — which covers the counties of Lincoln, Lawrence, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Wilkinson, Amite, Pike and Walthall — responded to two collisions, with only one injury, and issued 53 citations, including one seat belt violation and one child restraint violation.
