The Wesson Cobras will be in Lamar County Friday night facing the Sumrall Bobcats.

Coach Jeremy Loy and his group of Cobras are coming off a tough 19-12 loss to Crystal Springs in their season opener. In the loss junior quarterback Antrelle Sims was 2-of-6 passing for 75 yards and one score. Sims also rushed 17 times for 44 yards and a touchdown.

The leading Wesson ball carrier was junior Jason Edwards who ran 12 times for 54 yards. Senior Damien Smith scored the receiving TD after taking a screen pass 60 yards to the end zone.

Sophomore Collin McGowen made a team high 12 tackles and senior linebacker Scott Hutt added 10 stops. Junior Terrence Haley recovered a fumble.

Sumrall is coached by Shannon White and the Bobcats beat 5A South Jones 39-21 last week. In that game Sumrall was slinging the ball around as sophomore quarterback John Ford went 20-of-33 for 295 yards and a pair of scores.

Ford replaces Dannis Jackson under center as the former Sumrall QB is now a freshman wide receiver at Ole Miss.

Ford is a dual threat as he also rushed ten times for 10 yards and one touchdown. The Bobcat defense also forced four turnovers as they picked off a pair of passes and grabbed two fumbles from South Jones.

Ford’s favorite receiver was sophomore Tyler Daniels who caught six passes for 114 yards and one score. Junior Hayden Barrett hauled in five passes for 80 yards.

Last season Sumrall won a close game in Wesson 18-15 over the Cobras.

Kickoff in Sumrall is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
