COVID-19 update: Numbers of infected, deaths still rising in MS

The rate of coronavirus cases has begun to rise again as Mississippi enters October.

On Tuesday, the Mississippi Department of Health released its latest COVID-19 statistics.

In Lincoln County, the total number of cases stood at 1,123, with 53 deaths, 142 LTC outbreaks and 32 LTC deaths. The only number that has changed is the number of cases, which has risen by 33 since last reported Friday.

Statewide, there were 589 new cases reported and 36 new deaths. Those deaths were reported in the following counties: Bolivar, Clarke, Desoto, Jones, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lee, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Perry, Pike, Prentiss, Sharkey, Simpson, Stone, Tallahatchie and Tippah.

There were 15 COVID-19 related deaths identified from death certificates. These occurred in the following counties: Bolivar, Coahoma, Desoto, Hinds, Holmes, Marshall, Perry, Tallahatchie, Washington and Yazoo.

As of Tuesday, there were 125 current LTC outbreaks. An outbreak is when a single confirmed COVID-19 infection is found in an LTC facility resident or more than one infection is found in employees or staff in a 14-day period.

Hospitalizations have slightly decreased, with 477 patients across Mississippi being hospitalized for the coronavirus. Out of that total, 178 patients are in intensive care and 92 patients are on ventilators.

The total number of cases sat at nearly 100,000 cases Tuesday, specifically at 97,049, with 2,921 deaths. There are 89,737 of those cases are presumed recovered.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 823,185 tests have been conducted, with 728,519 tests being for positive detection of the virus, 38,720 tests for antibodies and 55,946 tests for antigens.

Testing is still available at King’s Daughters Medical Center. The COVID screening site is located behind the Emergency Room and will be open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
