Cobras jump on Lake Hornets

WESSON – Junior hurler Bailey Warren pitched a 3-hitter and the Wesson Cobras beat Lake’s Hornets 9-4 Saturday in a rain-delayed and error-filled opener of the Class 2A state baseball playoffs. Wesson, the Region 6-2A champion, drew an opening round bye and a 2-week layoff.

Wesson (21-5) plays at Lake today, starting at 2:30, as the best-of-three series continues. If Game 3 is necessary, it will be played at Wesson on Monday.

Warren (1K, 2BB) hit 5 batters and allowed 3 hits in the victory. His teammates committed a usually-fatal 6 errors.

“The two-week layoff hurt us,” said Wesson coach Seth Lofton. “We got timely hits to help us out and managed to overcome those errors.

“Bailey battled hard on the mound to get us a win.”

Losing pitcher Matt Mitchell (5K, 5BB) hit 2 batters, went 5 innings and took the loss. Lake (21-7) is coached by Jake Nester.

The Cobras finished with 9 hits. Directing the attack were third baseman Caleb Skinner and first baseman Cullen Greer who both doubled and singled. Warren singled twice. Jase Alexander, Quinton Munn and Alex Smith singled as the Cobras erased a 2-1 deficit with as 3-run third. They plated 3 more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Lake’s Luke Bryson doubled. Matt Mitchell and Jay Johnson singled.
