Cobras ease past Lake

The visiting Wesson Cobras overcame a 2-0 deficit with 3 runs topull out a 3-2 win over the Lake Hornets Thursday night in theopening round of Regional 2A Tournament at Loyd Star.

Wesson (17-5) faces Loyd Star today at noon. Two more gamesfollow, including a 3 p.m. contest between last night’s losers,followed by a game at 7 between the winner of the 3 p.m. game andthe loser from the noon game.

Lake, coached by Brian Goodman, falls to 15-13 with the loss andplays at 3 today against Newton.

“We played well enough to win,” said Wesson head baseball coachHugh Knight. “We gave them one (run). I thought the pitchers did agreat job. We want to come out as a team tomorrow and do a betterjob.”

The winning pitcher was Brett Selman (3-5) who went all seveninnings and finished with 2 runs allowed on 4 hits, 7 strikeoutsand 3 walks.

“i had good control,” said Selman after the win. “My curve ballwas working pretty well.”

Also going the distance for the loss was Jason Judge with 3 runsallowed on 6 hits, 6 strikeouts and one walk.

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Lake’s TerrellHicks smashed a solo home run over the right field fence for a 1-0lead. Cody Everett walked and Adam Brown drilled a hard double tocenterfield to score pinch runner Johnny Locks for the 2-0lead.

Wesson scored one run in the top of the third to cut the deficitto 2-1. With two outs, Cory Puckett walked and stole second base.Daniel Watson ripped a hard single between shortstop and secondbase to score Puckett.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Cobras added anotherrun to tie the game at 2-all in the top of the fifth. With twoouts, Puckett advanced to first on an error and stole second on awild pitch. Watson singled and Puckett scored the tying run.

The top of the sixth saw Wesson go ahead 3-2 and hold on for thewin. With one out, Mason Warren singled and stole second on a wildpitch. Brandon Hood doubled to the centerfield fence to scoreWarren for the go head run.

Wesson left six runners stranded on base. Lake left three onbase.

Zack Edwards and Adam Brown singled for Lake.
