Franklin man killed in collision

A McCall Creek man died in a two-vehicle collision Saturdayevening in Amite County, said Staff Sgt. Rod Crawford, publicaffairs officer for the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Joseph F. Gentiles and his wife, Madeline, both 76, weretraveling north on Highway 569 when their 1997 Ford Taurus pulledout in front of an eastbound 2004 Jeep Cherokee driven by James R.Burr, 40, of Meadville, Crawford said.

The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 569 andHighway 570 at Smithdale. The Taurus was struck on the driver’sside and Joseph Gentiles was ejected, Crawford said.

“He was pronounced dead at the scene,” Crawford said.

Crawford said there are stop signs on Highway 569 and traffic on570 has the right of way. Neither of the Gentiles was wearing aseat belt while Burr was restrained, the trooper said.

Madeline Gentiles was taken by ambulance to SouthwestMississippi Regional Medical Center, and Burr was taken by privatevehicle to Franklin County Memorial Hospital. Crawford said theirinjuries were considered life-threatening.
