CENTREVILLE — The Brookhaven Academy Cougars found themselvesin a must-win situation Friday night to stay alive in the playoffhunt. Class AA power Centreville Academy made sure that the Cougarswouldn’t come out on top. Powered by a balanced attack, the Tigersprevailed 48-34 in a game that featured little or no defense.

Brookhaven looked to be off to a strong start as the Cougarsscored on the first two possessions of the game to take a 14-0 leadwith three minutes remaining in the first quarter. QuarterbackPrice Sessums hit Cameron Achord from 20 yards out and DustyBratton scored on a one-yard run and Cole Hodges ran a 2-pontconversion.

Centreville answered at the 1:24 mark when Jennings Field hitChase Paulk on a 50-yard stike to close the score to 14-7.

The Tigers opened the second quarter of play with Tal Priestreceiving a Field pass from 14 yards out and Blake Devall diving infrom 3 yards out for touchdowns. Their final score of the half camewith :21 showing, when Priest caught another Field pass from 11yards out.

Brookhaven’s only score of the second quarter came when PriceSessums scored on a 20-yard run at the 6:36 mark. Centrevillecarried a 28-21 lead into the locker rooms.

Brookhaven’s bid for a second half comeback took a huge blow onthe opening kickoff when Blake Devall returned it 87 yards for thetouchdown. The Cougars were able to answer back when Sessums scoredon a three-yard run at the 7:28 mark closing the Tiger lead to35-28.

Centreville was able to add two more scores in the game whenPaulk received a 30-yard pass from Field and Devall scored on a 5-yard run to end the Tiger scoring. Brookhaven’s only other scorecame with 00:50 remaining in the third quarter. Dusty Brattonscored on a 2-yard run.

Brookhaven was led by Price Sessums who was 17-of-29 passing for281 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed the ball 7 times for 78yards and two touchdowns. Cameron Achord led all receivers with 11catches for 177 yards and a touchdown.

Centreville was led by Field who completed 8-of-18 passes for159 yards and three touchdowns. Devall had 133 yards on 29 carriesand two touchdowns.

On defense, Bratton led the Cougars with 12 stops. Achord had 10stops and a blocked extra point. Chris Falvey followed with 8tackles. Cole Hodges recovered a fumble.

Brookhaven returns home Friday night to host Trinity Episcopalin the final District 4-AA contest of the season. Kickoff is setfor 7 p.m.
