Funeral services for Dan. P. Weeks, of Wesson, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Sylvarena Baptist Church in Wesson, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Weeks, 75, died May 28, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends. Born Aug. 3, 1936 to James William and Nan Speed Weeks, he was a lifelong resident of Copiah County, dying on the same hill on which he was born. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, stationed at Keesler Air Force Base and serving a tour of duty near Seoul, South Korea, in the aftermath of the Korean War.

Immediately following his honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1958, Mr. Weeks carried on the family business, starting Weeks Dairy and making a living from the earth for the next 51 years. His wife, children and grandchildren helped with the numerous daily responsibilities and his youngest son, Tim, joined his father in the dairy business in 1979. Over the years, several local teenage boys were employed at the dairy and became a part of the extended family and were often referred to as “our boys.” Now, “our boys” are grown men, some with children older than they were when they helped at Weeks Dairy.

He was an active member of Sylvarena Baptist Church in Wesson, where he served at length as a deacon and was a member of various committees.

Dan was known for his honesty (sometimes brutal honesty), generosity (which was never-ending), and analytical mind (he knew when your great plan wasn’t going to work). He was well known for his mischievous sense of humor (he was pretty proud of it, anyway) and loved a good prank. He never shied away from hard work, and never backed down from a challenge. He was accustomed to sweat, blood, dirt and tractor grease.

Mr. Weeks loved his family, and we loved him.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Jeanette Jackson; brother, Billy Weeks; and great-grandsons, Abraham Denver and Aran Daniel Northam.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Ann Slay Weeks, of Wesson; sons, Jeff Weeks, of Denham Springs, La. and Tim Weeks and wife, Theresa, of Brookhaven; daughters, Beverly Weeks Tarver, of Wesson, and Judy Weeks Wilson and husband, Roger, of Brookhaven; brother, Jerry Weeks and wife, Laverne, of Vicksburg; sister, Charlotte Drane, of Wesson; grandchildren, Carrie Tarver Northam and husband, Adam, Jim Tarver and wife, Kaylee, all of Wesson, Bradley Weeks, Trisha Weeks Wells and husband, Jason, all of Baton Rouge, La. Joshua Wilson, of Hattiesburg, Elizabeth McDaniel, Joshua Milholen, Erin Milholen, all of Brookhaven, and Jake Wilson, of Jasper, Ala.; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Bergeron, Timothy Bergeron, Blaine, Cooper and Laikin Tarver, Kayden and Mason McDaniel, and Kreston and Anniston Wilson; in-laws, Patricia Slay King, Betty Slay Keywood, Russell and Jo Slay, Von and Brenda Slay, James N. “Jimmy” Slay, Deborah “Debbie” Slay Nance and David, Mrs. “Maudell” Weeks; special family friend, Charles Riddle; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sylvarena Baptist Church.
