Burton claims Top Five finish

VICKSBURG – Amanda Burton’s name was the second one called threetimes Saturday night during the Miss Mississippi Pageant at theVicksburg Convention Center.

The last name called during the night, though, was Miss DeepSouth Becky Pruett, who was crowned Miss Mississippi 2001.

Competing as Miss Byram Tri-County, Burton was named thirdrunner-up. Hers was second name called among the Top Five finishersin the pageant that featured 39 contestants this year.

Burton, 23, of Brookhaven, was twice the second name calledearlier in the night as the pageant’s Top Ten and Top Five wereannounced. It was the second time in her four pageant appearancesto finish in the Top Ten.

As a Top Five finisher, Burton, the daughter of John and KayBurton, receives a $2,900 scholarship and a third runner-up shereceives a $3,500 scholarship. Among all pageant participants, shewas also recognized with the Community Service Award, which carriesa $1,500 scholarship.

Miss Byram Tri-County was chosen in a pageant with contestantsfrom Hinds, Copiah and Lincoln counties.
