Ole Brook kickers take tourney

Saturday’s Ole Brook Soccer Tournament brought out the best inBrookhaven. Both the Panthers and Lady Panthers captured tourneytitles on King Field.

Coach Kevin Bower’s Panthers host McComb Tuesday for region 5Aaction, starting with a junior varsity game at 5 p.m. The varsitygirls play at 6, followed by the boys at 7:30.

“I was real proud of our teams,” said Bower. “Even when they losttheir first game, they didn’t give up. They came back and playedhard.”

In the opener, North Pike defeated the Lady Panthers 4-2. Seniormidfielder Amy Hoover scored twice for BHS.

Goalkeeper Katie Grace Culpepper had three saves for BHS.

Brookhaven rebounded to shut out Natchez Cathedral 4-0 as Hooverscored all four goals. Andy Netherland made an assist. Culpeppermade 4 saves in the shutout.

North Pike battled Cathedral to a scoreless draw in anothermatch.

A shootout with North Pike determined the tournament champion asthe Lady Panthers prevailed in sudden death. After the first fiveshootout kicks, the score was 3-3. Scoring in the shootout wereHoover, Lilly Montalvo and Lindy Wall.

Culpepper made a save on North Pike’s sudden death kick. EmilyGreen scored the winner for BHS.

The Lady Panthers are 6-6 on the season. They lost 5-0 to WarrenCentral Thursday night.

The Panthers also prevailed. They tied North Pike 0-0 as goalieHappy Uppal made 4 saves for BHS.

The Panthers defeated Cathedral 2-0 as Uppal posted anothershutout, making 7 saves. Houston Case scored the first goal on adeflection for a 1-0 halftime lead. J.J. Stepney scored the secondgoal.

BHS raised its record to 5-7-1. They were 8-0 victims of powerfulWarren Central in a Thursday night contest.

Bower said all of the Panthers’ wins this season have come onSaturdays in tournaments. “I hope our boys consider McComb atournament game.”
