Crystal Springs teams win BHS tourney

The Crystal Springs Lady Tigers and Tigers captured the 2007Brookhaven Invitational Round-Robin Tournament championshipsSaturday night in Sinclair Gym. In the girls game, the Lady Tigersfell to the Madison Central Jaguars 60-45. In the boys game,Crystal Springs defeated McComb 63-51.

In other tournament action, the Brookhaven Lady Panthers (No. 5)defeated the South Pike Lady Eagles (No. 3) in a battle of Top 10teams. The Brookhaven Panthers defeated the Amite County Trojans66-61 in overtime.

Brookhaven returns to action following the Thanksgivingholidays, Nov. 29-Dec. 1 in the Crystal Springs Round-RobinTournament.

Brookhaven 67, South Pike 40

The Lady Panthers (5-2) used their inside presence to dominatethis game from start to finish. Ole Brook’s frontline of SwayzeBlack, Nikki Byrd and Ashley Gayten combined for 50 points and 29rebounds. Brookhaven led 15-9 after one period and 37-21 at thehalftime break.

South Pike (4-3) shot 25 percent (7 of 28) from the field in thefirst half. The Lady Eagles had numerous opportunities to convert,but their shots would not fall.

“We missed too many easy shots,” said South Pike head coachMarcus Flippin. “We could not get anything going on the offensiveend.”

Ole Brook, coached by Freda Craft, saw its lead cut to 9 pointsearly in the third frame. South Pike’s Kierra Addison sacked abasket to cut their deficit to 42-33. That would be as close as theLady Eagles would get.

Craft’s crew was led by Black with a game-high 20 points; alongwith 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocked shots. Byrd tossed in 17points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Gayten had 13 points,2 assists and 3 steals.

Ivielle Stewart paced the Lady Eagles with 15 points.

Brookhaven 66, Amite Co. 61 OT

The Trojans (2-5) led throughout a majority of the opening half.Amite Co. held advantages of 13-6 heading into the second quarter,but trailed 28-22 at the intermission. Coach John Knight’s ballclubwere forced into 14 first-half turnovers.

The Panthers (3-5) kept their cushion until late in regulation.Missed free throw chances would force the extra session.

In the overtime, Ole Brook’s Charles Rancifer and SimmieYarborough worked on several combinations for baskets and assists.The Panthers made it a 2-possession game with 6 seconds left on theclock with a pair of free throws by Rancifer, who led all scorerswith 31 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 steals.

Lending support for Brookhaven were Yarborough with 13 points,10 rebounds and 2 steals. Chad Hall drew 5 charges.

Trabrial Jefferson topped Amite Co. with 21 points, followed byJustin Patterson with 17.

Madison Central 60, Crystal Springs 45

The Lady Jaguars, coached by Jackie Suggett, were led byLeishara Rouser with 19 points.

The Lady Tigers (4-2) were led by Shakina Green with 14 pointsand Feliculia Haley with 10 points. Crystal Springs is under thedirection of Danielle Busby.

Crystal Springs 63, McComb 51

Crystal Springs (5-1) was led by Josh Hollins with 18 points.Jaquerio Tillman tossed in 12 points, with Mazedrick Johnsonscoring 10 points for head coach Broderick Owens.

McComb (3-3) got a game-high 24 points from Mitchell Thompson.The Pike County-based Tigers are coached by Hilton Harrell.
