BOGUE CHITTO — Riding a two-game victory streak, the BogueChitto Bobcats find themselves in contention for the Region 4-1Achampionship. The Bobcats are 2-0 in the region after defeatingGulfport St. John 40-15 on the road, sparked by a surging offenseand heads-up defensive play, led by middle linebacker ScottyBrown.

For his performance, Brown has been selected The DAILY LEADER’sDefensive Player of the Week. Brown (5-11, 185, jr.) was creditedwith 11 tackles and two fumble recoveries in the Bobcats’ importantRegion 4-1A win over St. John.

“Scotty is a real gritty, tough-type player,” said Bogue Chittohead coach Gareth Sartin. “He doesn’t mind sticking his nose inthere and doing the dirty little jobs that have to be done ondefense. He’s always playing hard.

“He has led us in tackles every game this year,” Sartin pointedout. “He has a nose for the football.”:

What does Brown like best about playing linebacker?

“I like to hit people,” said Brown. “I enjoy blitzing thequarterback.”

Josh Wallace and Cole Laird also operate at linebacker in BC’sdefensive scheme. In the defensive line, Nick Noworyta, FredTillman and Bubba Bigner work up front.

“I think we are getting better every game,” said Brown. “We area lot better than the first two games. We could very easily be4-0.”

Brown and the Bobcats lost a pair of close games to start theseason, falling 34-28 to Class 3A North Pike and 40-39 to Class 2AMadison St. Joseph. They beat Stringer 37-20 two weeks ago fortheir first region win.

Brown plays left guard on BC’s offensive line. He said theBobcats can score by either running or passing the football.

“We are very fast and explosive,” said Brown. “We are able toscore just about every time we get the ball.”

In the weight room, Brown bench presses 205 pounds and squatswith 405. A catcher on BC’s baseball team, he was clocked at 4.9 inthe 40-yard dash.

Brown’s parents are Perry and Vasie Brown and both played highschool sports. His father graduated from Brookhaven and his motherfrom West Lincoln. His older sister, Meleah Brown, is on softballscholarship at Co-Lin at an outstanding career at Bogue Chitto.

After three straight road games, the Bobcats are happy to beback at home on Troy Smith Field Friday night for another bigregion game, this one against Biloxi Mercy Cross. Brown anticipatesa strong test.

“Mercy Cross is pretty solid,” said Brown. “We need a good gameagainst them. They went to the playoffs last year.”

Looking ahead, Brown said the Bobcats have high ambitions. “Wewant to make the state playoffs this year.”

Brown’s favorite college team is the Mississippi State Bulldogs.He’s a big fan of the New Orleans Saints.
