MONTICELLO – Senior Jason Snell does double duty for theLawrence County Cougars on Friday nights. Snell plays wingback onoffense and free safety on defense.

Snell rushed 10 times for 73 yards and scored four touchdowns inlast Friday to power Lawrence County (9-1, 5-1) to a 59-13 Region6-4A win over the Brookhaven Panthers.

Two of his TDs came on pass receptions.

The win secured Lawrence County with the important home-fieldadvantage for Friday night’s first-round game of state playoffswith Florence (6-4, 3-3), the No. 3 team of Region 5.

For his achievements against Brookhaven, Snell has been namedThe Daily Leader Offensive Player of the Week for the 10th week ofthe 2001 regular football season.

Snell was very pleased to be singled out as Offensive Player ofthe Week. “It’s a good experience,” said Snell. “I like it. I wassurprised about it.”

In the victory over Brookhaven, Snell carried for two touchdownson runs of 31 and 8 yards. He caught two passes from sophomorequarterback Casey Williams for 51 and 23-yard TDs.

One of Snell’s touchdowns was made on a diving catch with sevenseconds left until halftime. That 23-yard TD put the Cougars up34-13 over the Panthers.

“Jason is probably one of, if not our team’s best overallathletes,” said Lawrence County head coach Trent Hammond. “He cando so many things for us. He can play QB and run the option. He canbe a physical wingback and fullback.

“He’s also a great split end,” Hammond continued. “He runs a 4.5in the forty and he has great hands. Than he turns around and playsin the secondary for us. He’s our captain in the secondary at freesafety; one of only two, two-way players that we have.”

Snell was happy to beat Brookhaven in what has become a heatedrivalry in football.

“It was a pretty good win,” Snell said. “I felt pretty goodabout the win. Our defense played better than it had for the pastfew weeks.”

Snell’s favorite play is the 44-Jet pass. “I just run downfieldand get open,” he said.

Snell said appreciates his offensive teammates and what theycontribute to the success the Cougars have achieved this season.The offensive line includes senior tackle Rodney Keyes andsophomore Cory Williams, sophomore center Phillip Kimble, juniorguard Cory Rogers, senior guard Johnathan Eley and sometimessophomore weak/strong guard Joseph Magee.

Snell also included his offensive backfield mates, includingfullback Johnathan Eley and wingbacks senior Wayne Hardy, juniorCharles Brown and sophomore Kevin Wallace.

Hammond said Snell was a dedicated, outstanding performer in theteam’s summer weight training program. “He’s a good kid. He was oneof our Iron Cats this summer. We set some extremely high goals forour kids this summer. He met those goals and he has been a leaderfor us.

In his spare time, Snell has held the same job at Tri-CountyGrocery in New Hebron during his high school years.

When football season ends, Snell will hit the hardwood court andplay for Cougar boys basketball coach Bobby Lee. Last year, Snellplayed small forward.

Snell said he is a fan of the Southern Mississippi GoldenEagles. In college football, his favorite player was Virginia Techquarterback Michael Vick, who turned professional this season.

Following graduation, Snell says he will attend college andmajor in telecommunications. “I also want to play football.”

Snell’s parents are Gary and Carolyn Snell. He has an olderbrother Joseph, 20, and a younger brother, Jarius, 4.
