Mailboxes hit by vandalism; leads sought

A rash of mailbox vandalism cases that have occurred across the county are under investigation, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is looking for leads.

While most of the incidents occurred on the night of March 12, and continued in high frequency during the days after, further incidents have occurred since then.

“There have been close to 20 total incidents of vandalism,” said chief investigator John Whitaker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. “In some cases, the mailbox post has been sawed off. Mainly, though, the mailboxes have been hit with a blunt object, possibly a baseball bat,” Whitaker said.

“I’m sure someone has information about this. We will keep any information confidential,” he added.

Whitaker said the vandalism has primarily occurred at night, usually after midnight.

Whitaker noted that the offender(s) often travel down several different roads in the same night. Sometimes, the offender(s) go from mailbox to mailbox. The vandalism has occurred all over the county, he said.

The dates of most of the incidents corresponded with spring break for area schools, although there is no indication at this time whether that had any connection.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is requesting assistance from the public in tracking down those responsible for the vandalism.

Anyone with information regarding the cases should contact the Lincoln County sheriff’s department at 601-833-5251.
