Richardson, who helped the society members understand the inner workings of radio communications, said that besides pursuing an enjoyable hobby, ham radio operators are able to operate anywhere, and without much expense. This is a significant advantage during a major emergency or disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, Richardson said.
